Indonesia’s diverse cultures and traditions offer a fascinating exploration:
Culturally, Indonesia is one of the most diverse countries in the world as it is home not less than 520 recognized tribes and more than 720 spoken languages. Unfortunately the dances of the various Indonesian islands like; the double chewing performancers of Bali or the graphic wood carvings of Yogyakarta are some examples of cultural attractions offered in Indonesia. Traveling to Sulawesi to see funeral ceremony or going to North sumatra to experience the way of live of Batak people, their style of house and much more.
The fauna of Indonesia is as diverse and unimaginable as its flora: Sumatra and Borneo are the last refuge of the orangutan, while on the islands of Komodo and Rinca one can meet the world’s largest living reptile – the Komodo dragon. A hiking through the thick of jungle of Kalimantan is an opportunity to meet with the rarely seen species like the clouded leopard, sun bear, and pygmy elephants. Another major island nation that boasts of its impressive coral reefs which people come from all over the world to dive and snorkel in Indonesia, including Raja Ampat and the Gili Islands.
Indonesia is situated in the Pacific Ring of Fire and as a result the country is home to a large number of active volcanoes that are ideal for the adventurous traveler. Volcanoes are a favorite among tourists with Mount Bromo in East Java and Mount Rinjani in Lombok some of the most popular ones because of the beautiful scenery coupled with the tough trek. A little bit of adventure can be found at the Ijen Crater in East Java, where at night one can catch a glimpse of blue flame due to reactions of sulfur.
Just like any other part of the world, Indonesia’s food is highly diverse since every area has been found to have its unique tasty delights. In Sumatra, you can taste hot and exotic meals which include Rendang that is a spicy beef curry, and Soto Medan – a soup of coconut milk.
Java has relatively ‘tamer’ dishes that include Nasi Gudeg, which features sweet Jack fruit stew, while Bali is better known for Babi Guling and Bebek Betutu the respective roasted suckling pig and spicy duck. Aside from that, local street foods such as satay skewers which are grilled marinated meats, Nasi Goreng, the Indonesian fried rice and Martabak; a pancake stuffed with meat and vegetables are also famous in the country.
But of course, it is known that Bali, Java, and Sumatra are the most popular destinations within Indonesia, however, there are so many more islands that are not as famous, but just as beautiful. Banda Islands in the Maluku archipelago that once dominated the world spice market today boasts of beautiful sandy beaches, strategic forts and world-class diving sites. The unique island of Karimunjawa which is situated of the coast of Java is also another gem that has great features of clear water and beautiful marine life. Being an environment lover and a light adventurer, I was looking forward to stay in a rustic island accommodation in the Togean Islands, Central Sulawesi.
